Josef Topf of Oberdürnbach near Maissau married a daughter from the Traunfellner estate on Strass Nr. 6. Even back then wine-growing was their main source of income. They used to take their wine to Vienna by horse and cart to sell it to the local inn-keepers.
A trip there and back would take three days.
As the eighth child of the family, Johann Topf I. took over his parents’ property at the age of thirty-three, and decided to begin from scratch. Various circumstances, such as the owner’s early death, the death of the eldest son, and the devastating effect of the phylloxera pest caused great damage to the business.
Johann Topf senior took over the family winery from his parents and was one of the first winemakers in Strass to bottle wines.
With its nine hectares – roughly 22 acres – the winery was pretty small compared to now, but already then he delivered wine to clients throughout Austria.
When Hans Topf was taking over the winery, he was able to acquire the former estate of Tassilo und Franz-Albrecht Metternich-Sándor in 1998.
Since that time he was able to enlarge the winery five times its original size.
His vision is to make great vines by considering different soils, grape varietals and micro climates.
